In 1983, Elio was a 17-year-old Italian Jewish teenager living with his parents in a rural area in Northern Italy. That summer, his father—an archeology professor—invited 24-year-old Jewish-American graduate student Oliver to live with the family to help and assist him with his research. Elio, a person with a sensitive soul, an avid reader, and a natural talent for music, finds himself in contrast to Oliver's carefree, open personality.
