As an independent series in contrast to tv series, the samurai anime Sword of the Stranger was released in 2007 and takes place in a fictional historical era about Japan's past. A group of pirates from the west are relentlessly pursuing a boy named Kotaro,  who only has his dog Tobimaru and an unknown samurai named Nanashi by his side to help him. However, Nanashi had a dark past and was not allowed to draw swords, an unusual problem for samurai.

As the story continues in Sword of the Stranger, the stories behind the mysteries of both protagonists are revealed, and we will find out why Kotaro was chased along with Nanashi and where he came from. The content has a number of political and social conspiracies that alter the plot, keeping it from being too framed.
