Death Note is one of the most popular gothic style anime of all time. The anime tells the story of Light Yagami, a high school boy who possesses a strange notebook and gains the ability to kill anyone he writes his name on.

Death Note is also an excellent cat and mouse series, bursting with mind games including plot twists. The intellectual rivalry between Light and L is unmatched. The highlight of this anime is seeing Light's already fragile understanding of corrupt morality, as he only justifies ever-greater crimes in the name of "justice". In addition to the dark theme and the villainous protagonist, Death Note shows a healthy gothic style through the characters Misa and Ryuk.

As an action, horror anime with a clear gothic sound, Darker Than Black is excellent for many reasons. First and foremost is its premise: spatial anomalies lead to the emergence of people with special powers, called Contractors,  for each pays a special price for his ability.

The main character - assassin Hei plays a rather excellent, attractive role. He brings depth, excitement to what could become a traditional, albeit dark, supernatural story. His character combined with a host of other villains comes with interesting quirks, making Darker Than Black truly worth watching for gothic anime fans.

Secrecy and violence are two common elements in gothic stories, and in Tokyo Ghoul, they are shown quite fully. In this gothic-style anime, humans accidentally live next to carnivorous monsters called vampires. These creatures hide their existence from humans in order to continue their terrible feeding habits, in order to hunt down unsuspecting people.

The main character Ken Kaneki, along with many other characters, exudes a gothic style. Particularly noteworthy was his terrifying tooth-filled mask. However, not content with simply adding a little dark pigment to the cast of characters, Tokyo Ghoul creates enough of cinema's violent, harrowing themes to please any darkness-loving person.

Those who equate "gothic" with "depression" should look elsewhere right away, as xxxHOLiC is a rather light + humorous gothic style anime that comes with its serious aesthetic. While it may be based on fun in a way that one wouldn't normally associate for the genre, xxxHOLiC still has an undeniable gothic flavor, especially in the styling from the cast of characters.

A high school student who can see spirits and a witch who owns a wish shop are ideal candidates to pique viewers' interest in the gothic anime genre, and they certainly won't be disappointed. Kimihiro and Yuko both share great moments throughout the anime, but Yuko is probably the main star here.
