Describe an important event that you celebrated

When asked this question, what immediately flickers through my mind is the National Day which I celebrated with my friends last year. National Day of Vietnam is a national holiday observed on September 2nd to commemorate the moment when President Ho Chi Minh declared Vietnam an independent state on September 2nd 1945.

Often on this day, I will head for a far-away tourist destination to let my hair down. But unfortunately, 2019’s National Day holiday lasted only one day so traveling far away was out of the question. For this reason, my friends and I had a novel idea: “Why don’t we travel in our own city because Hanoi was the place where the Decla-ration of Independence was made?”

With this pretty wild idea, we decided to wake up early in the morning and went to Ba Dinh square to watch the flag-raising ceremony. What a sacred moment to relive, and to truly comprehend why we can have this peaceful Vietnam to reside in! After that, we just roamed through the city for a food tour and played bowling together. One thing I found quite intriguing was that when we had a feast for lunch, the restaurant put a small Vietnamese flag on every dish to remind everybody of this special day, which seemed really cute to me.

Although not being able to travel far away on National Day put a damper on my mood, the trip around Hanoi was still an enjoyable experience for me and all my friends. I just hope that the holiday for the National Day next year will last longer so that my playful squad can go on a true vacation.

Talk about tet holiday in Viet Nam

I’ve had quite a few defining events in my life so far, but when it comes to the most memorable, the one I want to tell you about would be none other than my acceptance to a university overseas. 

It was in the form of an admission letter from them a couple of years back. At the time, I was about to graduate from high school, so I tried to apply to multiple schools abroad. I fancied my chances of entering an international university, but it still took quite a while before I would be admitted. One of the places that I sent my application to was Springfield University in the United States, which sent me an invitation letter several weeks after I submitted my form.

I informed my Mom and Dad once I finished reading the email. I could recall that they were as ecstatic as I was, just short of jumping for joy like children. It was in the afternoon too, so we put off our plans for the rest of the day to go to a restaurant to celebrate. It was a meal that I don’t think I’d ever be able to forget too, but that’s for another day.

That letter was the beginning of my journey as an international student. Without such a start, I would’ve never become the person I am today. I could have lived very differently, so differently that it wouldn’t be me sitting in front of you at this very moment.

Describe a time you saw something interesting on social media

It may sound depressing to some, but social media takes up 70% of my time every day. I have all sorts of social platforms on my phone, and I am frequently present online. The reason why I’m so attached to social media is partly due to tons of intriguing things up there. Nonetheless, if I have to choose, that one time when I found out about tarot reading will be the most unforgettable.

This discovery of mine occurred quite a while ago, probably during one of the very first lockdowns in Hanoi. At that time, I was stuck in the house all day experiencing the repeated ‘studying, eating, sleeping’ cycle. Nonetheless, that period did give me plenty of time to arrange my thoughts and reflect on myself.

I remembered having so many questions for myself that I suffered from sleepless nights trying to figure out a solution or an answer to my problems. I knew that I needed help since I myself could not solve my problems. Coincidentally, at that time, reading tarot cards rose as a trend on Youtube- an online video sharing platform. Everyone was talking about this young woman who identified herself as a Tarot reader/healer, and her account was Chi de Papillon. 

Chi performed tarot reading sections on her channel and gave advice regarding love life, financial status, future prediction, etc, based on the cards she pulled out from different tarot decks. At first, I gave her videos a try for pure curiosity, whereas her interpretations were significantly accurate and connected with my life problems. I was in awe and became obsessed with her sections as they were so useful and motivated as well.

Chi’s videos really get me out of boredom during 3 consecutive months of quarantine. Her video makes me realize that reading tarot is undoubtedly an art, and the readers are all great artists.
