1 Describe a creative person
Well, I have had the chance to meet a whole bunch of creative individuals in my entire life, but given the chance to talk about the one whose work I really look up to, I would love to share with you about Mr. Dzung, one of my lecturers in my master’s program.
Specifically, he teaches Financial Markets and Institutions, one of the most important subjects this semester. You may think, how come a teacher of finance-related subjects, which involve loads of statistically complicated issues, can exude creativity in their work? But I gotta tell you, from what I’ve seen, he has got an innovative teaching approach that every student can get hooked on.
The first thing that springs to my mind about this wonderful teacher is his storytelling ability, which sets him apart from the others. Conventionally, other lecturers tend to present solely based on the slides that they have already prepared before. However, Mr. Dzung only considers his slides a supporting assistant. He always tries to integrate a relatable story about the market with specific cases into his lessons so that his students can have a more comprehensive understanding of the knowledge. Every story he tells is well thought out and unique in its own way, which we can’t get enough of.
What makes me, and my peers adore him, even more, is the practical experience that he brings into his class. There are no traditional tests in which we have to stick to our seats for nearly an hour. Instead, we have the opportunity to attend mock trading sessions, where we have to make our own decisions about whether, and when to buy or sell our financial assets. Every time we sit for this kind of exam, we get the feeling of being real traders, and it seems that we have found the motivation to study and pursue this career path.
All in all, it is such a blessing to be one of his students this semester, and I cannot wait for what this creative genius has up his sleeve in future classes.
2 Describe your mother
My mom is the one that I cherish the most in my life, so I usually go out with her the most out of all the family members. My mother is the homemaker in the family. Actually, she used to go to work, but she decided to step back and took care of the me when I was in grade 12 preparing for the university entrance exam. That’s why I think she is a devoted parent, sacrificing her career for her child. She’s also quite strict about my study, so inevitably, we had a few arguments, but we never reached a long-standing family feud.
So, to talk about what we often do together, there are two casual activities. The first one is going shopping. To be honest, my mom is my personal stylist. She is the one who advised me to wear more dresses like high-waist or A – line ones, which perfectly suit my body shape.
Furthermore, going to the cinema is what we also like to do in our spare time. We all have a compatible movie taste and our favourite genre is comedy. Honestly, I think we have watched “Bridesmaids” no less than three times. As I have started going to work in the recent two years, I have less time to hang out with my mom, but I try to clear my schedule at weekends or at least do lunch with her on Sunday.
Even though I am fairly busy with my job, I still want to talk to her about things like my co-workers or my tasks because I want her to know that I can handle my job well and I am safe in this environment. Also, since she is my nearest and dearest, I want to become a reliable child so that she can lean on when she gets old.
3 Describe a person you follow on social media
I don’t tend to follow a lot of people on social media, but one who I could remember is Nick Mullen, an American comic and actor.
I first knew him from YouTube clips of his stand-up comedy work, where he came off as a frequent face of the New York comedy scene. And through YouTube, I also learned of his podcast and social media account on Twitter. It turns out that Nick has an even larger following on the Internet. Fortunately, Nick doesn’t separate his Twitter presence into a personal account and public account like so many people, so it’s easier to catch up with his thoughts at any time.
Nick’s posts on his Twitter feed consist almost entirely of jokes, save for the few posts where he advertises his tour dates. The jokes are exhilarating for being a combination of satire, pop culture knowledge and Internet culture. However, they might be off-putting to people who haven’t been on the Internet for a long time, as these people will have a harder time seeing what’s funny in Nick’s jokes. Still, the posts are apolitical and without any severity, which might explain why so many people follow Nick.
All in all, Nick’s Twitter is a source of comedic relief on the virtual space. I’d definitely say that it’s a refreshing breeze of wind on social media, which is frequently flooded with depressing and humorless information.
4 Describe one of your best friends
I got to talk to about a friends of mine who is also my mother and a person I have known all my life. When it comes to talking about her appearance, she’s in her 50, but she looks young for her age. She’s a passionate home cook who knows a lot of dishes from different cuisines and understands favor combinations. She’s a pastry connoisseur. I often spend time making cakes with Mom. We often look for inspiration and recipes online. Sometimes, we make some modifications to the recipe to suit our taste, such as reducing the amount of sugar. Mum does most of the baking, and I do the clean-up. I’m the first to enjoy the freshly baked goodies.
The reason I choose to talk about my mum instead of any friends at school is because we spend a lot of time together. With cooking, we had a great bonding time in which I could share what happened in class and ask her for some advice. I can pretty much confide anything with her. Another lesson I learned from my mum is attention to detail because, with baking, miscalculation of any ingredients would lead to disastrous results.
5 Describe a person whose work is useful to society
Let me tell you about my friend, Linh, whose job I believe is critical to the well-being of our society, especially in this day and age. She is a few years older than me and is currently working as a nurse at our local hospital. Linh is also my neighbor so we get to hang out quite often.
I think Linh’s job is incredibly important, especially amid a raging pandemic like COVID-19. She helps care for patients, communicate with doctors, administer medicine, and check vital signs. Not only does she have to care for the patient, she also supports their families by helping them cope with the illness of their loved ones, and if necessary live with it, so that these people can work through the obstacles that may arise with the sickness of a family member. Nurses are always the first to notice when the patient’s conditions change. They must always be ready to spring into action in any emergencies or critical situation.
Serving as the front line of healthcare, Linh and other nurses also expose themselves to a lot of risks. For this pandemic, Linh has been taking up numerous long shifts. There are many days when she could not go home because the hospital was understaffed. There are also days when Linh had to quarantine at work due to exposure to a COVID-positive patient. Despite all these difficulties, I have never seen Linh complaining about her jobs. She has a heart of gold and genuinely seems to find joy in helping people. Thanks to her and other medical professionals, we can deal with all the diseases and illnesses in our lifetime and stay healthy. I always have immense respect for them.
