  In 1983, Elio was a 17-year-old Italian Jewish teenager living with his parents in a rural area in Northern Italy. That summer, his father—an archeology professor—invited 24-year-old Jewish-American graduate student Oliver to live with the family to help and assist him with his research. Elio, a person with a sensitive soul, an avid reader, and a natural talent for music, finds himself in contrast to Oliver's carefree, open personality. He gave up his bedroom to Oliver during his stay. Elio spends much of the summer reading and hanging out with his girlfriend, Marzia, while Oliver is attracted to another local girl, which makes Elio feel rather disgruntled.

  After that, Elio and Oliver began to spend a lot of time together, and their mutual attraction emerged: swimming together, walking in town, going on an archeology trip together with Elio's father. Although Elio has begun a relationship with Marzia and brags about it in front of Oliver to see his reaction, he finds himself increasingly attracted to Oliver. He sneaked into Oliver's room, feeling his scent still wafting through his swimming trunks. During a trip to the post office, Elio confesses his feelings to Oliver, but he advises him not to. When they went together to Elio's secret location, he kissed Oliver on the lips. He returned the kiss but didn't want to go any further. The two separated for a few days after that.
