The film faithfully portrays the love of family and humanity during World War II in Japan. After the mother dies of the war, the father who goes to the navy for the Japanese army loses news, brothers Seita and Setsuko have to rely on each other to live. In the early days, the brothers moved into relatives' houses, but what they both received from their relatives was slurs and aloofness. The prolonged war leaves people exhausted and gradually losing their humanity, ready to do anything to get a piece of food, including abandoning those closest to them. Out of self-esteem, the brothers once again left, living temporarily in a bomb shelter. To stay alive, both must eat everything they can earn and even steal.
