Grave of the Fireflies is based on the novel of the same name by Nosaka Akiyuki. Released in 1988, the film realistically reflects the cruelty of war through the narration of Seita's soul, along with the touching story of two children. Two brothers, Seita and Setsuko, were unfortunately born during World War II. Their mother died after a terrible bomb attack by the US Air Force caused the village to be engulfed in flames, the father was serving the Navy. The Imperial Japanese Army has since gone silent. Seita and Setsuko have since relied on each other, fighting poverty and living with their harsh aunt, even selling memorabilia of the mother of two children. In the end, Seita chose to take her sister away from her relative's house, only to have to roll in the middle of a chaotic life, Setsuko died of illness. The end of the film is the image of the souls of Seita and Setsuko surrounded by fireflies and bullets. It's so heartbreaking because both are victims of a senseless war but still have extremely strong aspirations to live. The film had a live-action version released in 2005.
