Hannibal Lecter is a fictional character in the detective thriller series by Thomas Harris. Lecter was first introduced in 1981 in the horror novel Red Dragon, as a brilliant psychiatrist and serial killer and eater. The novel and its sequel, (The Silence of the Sheep), Lecter is the second rival to the two serial killers in both novels. In the third novel, Hannibal, Lecter becomes a main character. And in the final novel in the series, Hannibal Rising (Hannibal's revenge), tells about his past and why he became a serial killer. In 1991, Anthony Hopkins won an Academy Award for his performance in The Silence of the Lambs. He also returned to play Lecter in 2001's Hannibal and in the second adaptation of Red Dragon in 2002 under its official title. In 2003, Hannibal Lecter (the character played by Anthony Hopkins) was selected by the American Film Institute as the top villain on the American Film Institute's List of 100 Heroes and Villains. In July 2010, Lecter was on Entertainment Weekly's list of the 100 Greatest People of the Last Twenty Years.
