Inside Job is a 2010 American documentary film, directed by Charles Ferguson, about the financial crisis of the late 2000s. Ferguson, who began researching in 2008, says the film is about "corruption" systemic corruption in the financial services industry and its consequences.”
The documentary is divided into five parts. It begins by examining how Iceland was highly deregulated in 2000 and privatized its banks. When Lehman Brothers went bankrupt and AIG collapsed, Iceland and the rest of the world fell into a global recession. At the Federal Reserve's Jackson Hole annual conference in 2005, Raghuram Rajan, then the chief economist of the IMF, warned of growing risks in the financial system and suggested policies that would reduce that risk. Former US Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers called the warnings "misguided". However, after the financial crisis of 2007-2008, in retrospect Rajan's views were seen as prophetic and he was interviewed for this film.
In five parts, the film explores how changes in the policy environment and banking practices contributed to the creation of the financial crisis. Inside Job was highly praised by film critics, praising the film's pacing, research, and intricate presentation of material. It screened at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival in May and won the 2010 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.
