Mindhunter is an American crime drama series based on the book "Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit" by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker. The film follows two FBI investigators, Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany), as they begin a research project into criminal psychology. They interview history's most notorious serial killers to learn about their motives and modus operandi.

Season 1 of the show is set in 1977, when serial murders were on the rise in the United States. Holden Ford is a young, enthusiastic FBI agent with a desire to better understand the minds of killers. He was tasked with establishing a new unit specializing in criminal psychology research. Bill Tench is a former soldier and criminal psychologist. He became Holden's mentor on this project.

In season 1, Holden and Bill interview many serial killers, including Ed Kemper, Richard Speck, and John Wayne Gacy. They gradually understand that serial killers are often people with psychological problems, with traumatic experiences in the past.

Season 2 of the show is set in 1980. Holden and Bill continue their research work. They interviewed more serial killers, including Charles Manson, Dennis Rader, and Wayne Williams. They also began applying their knowledge to ongoing cases.
