The Table Mountain is a flat-top mountain that forms a prominent highlight, overlooking the city of Cape town in South Africa, and is selected as the signature image of Cape Town's flag and other local government badges. This is a substantial tourist attraction, with many visitors using the cable car or walking up the top. The mountain is part of the Mount Pong National Garden. The main feature of the Table Mountain is about 3 km (2 miles) from side to side, in addition to the impressive cliffs. The plateau, on the sides of the east and the lion's head to the west, forms a dramatic backdrop to Cape Town. This sweeping mountain elevation, along with the Signal Hill, forms a natural lecture of the Bowl City and Table Bay Harbor. The highest point on the table mount is the eastern end of the plateau and is marked by the Maclear Beacon, the stone Dock built in 1865 by Sir Thomas Maclear for the observation of the polygonal survey. The mountain is 1,086 metres (3,563 ft) above sea level, about 19 metres (62 ft) tall compared to cable stations at the western end of the plateau.
