Stand and Deliver
Biography of high school teacher Jaime Escalante, whose teaching methods inspired his students and colleagues. He gave up his engineering job to take a job at Garfield High School in East Los Angeles. The school was about to be de-accredited by the school district due to poor academic results, and Escalante's goal was that students would meet expectations and those at the school could do better. After several years of success, he decided he wanted to teach them calculus, pushing his students to do their best. He also gave himself a mild heart attack. Working with students and their parents, many of whom thought school was a waste of time, 18 of them eventually passed the Advanced Placement calculus exam, bringing giving them college credit. The Educational Testing Service discovered some irregularities in the scores and suspected them of cheating, leading to a crisis. When the students rewrote the test and passed - again with high scores - they and Escalante were exonerated of any wrongdoing and their grades were reinstated.
