Decoding the fake documentary film The Blair Witch Project
The pseudo-documentary, The Blair Witch Project, directed, written and edited by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, was released in 1999 using unknown actors as a trio of forged documentarians, who who got lost only to end up disappearing in the woods of Maryland in search of the Blair Witch. Murick and Sánchez then promoted the film as real, set up a website with fake police reports and interviews, and even distributed flyers at film festivals advertising actors claiming to be "missing". Filmed on a budget of just $60,000, The Blair Witch Project received critical acclaim and nearly $250 million at the box office.
