The Duchess is based on Amanda Foreman's biography of late 18th-century English aristocrat Georgiana Cavendish. The film tells the story of young girl Georgiana signing a marriage contract with William - Duke of Devonshire with the expectation that she will soon give birth to a male heir for him.
However, Georgiana quickly became disillusioned because her husband brought a motherless child, Charlotte, to live with her while she was pregnant.
