He had to lose a lot of weight in order to look like a boxer addicted to Dick Eklund. The main story in the film tells about two legendary boxing brothers Mickey Ward and Dick Eklund. Throughout the film, Mickey's violent battles go hand in hand with Dick's downfall because of drugs.
