"The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House" is a live-action film project co-produced by Netflix, Story Inc. and Bun-Buku Inc. The January 2023 Netflix film is based on "Maiko in Kyoto: From the Maiko House," a popular manga by Aiko Koyama, serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday since 2016.The film is set in Kyoto's Geisha-intensive district. The protagonist Kiyo becomes a Makanai (who cooks meals) at the house where the Geisha live together. The story depicts the daily lives of girls who are seen as symbols of traditional femininity in Japan as well as reflecting Japanese culture through food.
The manga won the 65th Shogakukan Manga Award and is a bestseller with over 1.8 million copies. The live-action version released on January 1 next year will be just as successful.
