Ulysses 31 is an anime series inspired by Greek mythology from 1981 that retells the story of the Odyssey. However, instead of simply animating the story as it is, Ulysses 31 turned it into a space adventure. Odysseus was transformed into Ulysses, the captain of the Odyssey Spaceship, but still fled the Greek Pantheon. They cursed him to roam the space, and never returned home until he found the Underworld.
Along the way, Ulysses and his crew encounter countless other characters and gods from Greek mythology who have been redesigned in the future. Scylla and Charybdis are modeled into two planets and Circe is an alien scholar. This is really a fascinating way to experience the original story with unique twists.
