11 Describe a book you have recently read
To tell the truth, as opposed to my nerdy appearance, I have never been a book enthusiast. I don’t really experience joy in the process of sitting still and staring at thick pages for hours, thus, I hardly ever read. Nonetheless, there is one book that I actually take pleasure in reading. It is called “Dear girls”, written by the one and only, my favorite stand-up comedian, Ali Wong.
I learned about this book last month through 2 of Ali Wong’s Netflix comedy special hits, “Baby Cobra” and “Hard Knock Wife”. Unfortunately, since Ali did the show when she was pregnant with her second daughter, after the show, she was absent from the stage for a few months. While waiting for her comeback, I decided to give her book a shot. Much as I hate reading, for the love of Ali, I managed to place an order, sit down and spend my time on a 200-page book.
And thankfully, the book lives up to my expectations. “Dear girls” is in fact a well-prepared letter to Ali’s daughters when they get older. It is filled with Ali’s life experience, covering everything a girl needs to know in life. Ali interpreted the world in such a unique way, she gave out her unfiltered thoughts on marriage, Asian culture, working women, and so on. The book was absurdly funny, surprisingly moving, enlightening, and also disgusting as expected from Ali. I believe that this book will be most suitable for people who would enjoy something out of the ordinary or simply have a big laugh.
Even though I haven’t got the time to finish the whole book, I believe it has made reading more pleasant than ever before. Through reading it, I not only gain more life lessons but also way too much laughter.
12 Describe a program on computer/a mobile app on the phone that you use
In the age of tech obsession like today, a smartphone teeming with a variety of useful apps is so crucial that those without it are immediately considered behind the time. I also have one for my own and the app that I find among the most beneficial for me is Google Maps – an app that assists in navigation.
Google Maps is the archetype of web mapping service so nearly every-one have a smartphone has to have it. I myself am no exception as when my parents bought me one during secondary school years, I downloaded Google Maps right away.
Using Google Maps is not that hard because simply put, it’s just an online map but the way you make use of that app is what matters. This app comes in handy to me mostly in self-navigation and route plan-ning, especially when I am in an unfamiliar place like when I was a university freshman coming to Hanoi or traveling to a faraway destina-tion.
Google Maps has helped me a great deal in familiarizing myself with the road system of a place and moulding me as “a living Google Maps”, as my friends often call me. Before, I was just a freshman who was still wet behind the ears. But now that I use that app so often, I have come to know Hanoi like the back of my hand now, which really impresses my friends, even some of Hanoi-born ones. When it comes to traveling – my ultimate hobby, Google Maps is my best buddy in navigation, especially in some places with extremely compli-cated road systems like Dalat or Saigon.
So Google Maps seems to be part and parcel to me whenever on road. But just one small word to remember: Don’t trust Google Maps every time because sometimes, it may lead you to some surprises, mostly not so pleasant.
13 Describe an event that changed your life
I’ve had quite a few defining events in my life so far, but when it comes to the most memorable, the one I want to tell you about would be none other than my acceptance to a university overseas.
It was in the form of an admission letter from them a couple of years back. At the time, I was about to graduate from high school, so I tried to apply to multiple schools abroad. I fancied my chances of entering an international university, but it still took quite a while before I would be admitted. One of the places that I sent my application to was Springfield University in the United States, which sent me an invitation letter several weeks after I submitted my form.
I informed my Mom and Dad once I finished reading the email. I could recall that they were as ecstatic as I was, just short of jumping for joy like children. It was in the afternoon too, so we put off our plans for the rest of the day to go to a restaurant to celebrate. It was a meal that I don’t think I’d ever be able to forget too, but that’s for another day.
That letter was the beginning of my journey as an international student. Without such a start, I would’ve never become the person I am today. I could have lived very differently, so differently that it wouldn’t be me sitting in front of you at this very moment.
14 Describe a bicycle/ motorcycle/ car trip you would like to go
I would love to make a car trip in the near future. This has been a lifelong dream; however, none of my family members or friends obtained a driving license, which is why I was unable to fulfill the wish. Now, since my father has bought a brand-new SUV that is perfect for road trips, my whole family and I are prepared for the exciting adventures ahead as soon as the pandemic lockdown measures are lifted.
The journey would be wasted and tedious without great companions. Indeed, I have planned this trip for my beloved family. It would be nice to go on some national holiday as we want to take advantage of the days off. I also like to set off in pleasant weather conditions, so spring would be fantastic for a road trip.
Our itinerary will include visits along the coast from the northern region to the middle area of my country, and the final destination will be Hoi An ancient town located on Vietnam’s central coast. This stunning World Heritage site is synonymous with charming architecture, unique ambiance from a mix of eras and styles, superb local cuisine, and generous hospitality.
Besides, there is a wide range of cultural and shopping activities to choose from, such as participating in authentic cooking classes, browsing at Central market, and doing farm work in the vegetable village. When feeling tired, I would unwind on the tranquil, palm-lined beach of An Bang, situated not far away from the old town center. I have visited Hoi An town several times, but with a road trip by car, it would be quite an experience that I can share with my family for the first time.
15 Describe a time you were sleepy but had to stay awake
When I was in my second year in college, we had a subject called Research Practice. This subject teaches us different research methods and asks us to apply those methods in practice. One of the most common ways of doing research is conducting questionnaires or surveys, and that was when I got involved in answering a questionnaire.
The questionnaire was a part of my classmate’s research to determine college students’ study habits of English as a second/ foreign language in relation to how well they could use the language. I was asked to answer the survey to help my friend collect enough data for her study.
It’s quite funny to admit, but I was reluctant at first to take the survey because I was afraid that it would be too time-consuming. I was already quite occupied with my research at that time, and the deadlines were also close, so time mattered a lot to me. But eventually, I still agreed to help my friend.
I can’t remember exactly all of its content, as it’s been quite a long time since we did the questionnaire. But as far as I can recall, it asked something like how often I did homework, how much time I spent on self-studying, what sources of extra materials I usually sought out apart from our syllabus, and so on.
It turned out to be more rewarding than I thought. Even though the research was just a part of our assignment, I could reflect somewhat on my own study habits. Moreover, after finishing the survey, I had some good advice on questionnaire design from my friend to improve my own, as hers was a good one. That helped me a lot indeed.
