Azur Lane takes place in a cosmic version (Image: google play)

  • Original release date: May 25, 2017

    Genre: Shooting games

    Licensing: Funimation

    Studio: Bibury Animation Studio

    Developer: Manjuu, Yongshi

    Platforms: Android, iOS

Publishers: Yostar, X.D. Global, Bilibili, 株式会社Yostar

Azur Lane is relatively new, having become an anime in the fall of 2019. However, the game was announced in September 2018. It is a mobile gacha RPG with elements of shooting, simulation, and side scrolling. You collect anthropomorphic girls that serve as warships. You fight the bad guys with the girls on your ship. Azur Lane takes place in an alternate cosmic version of World War II. In addition to the obvious Kantai Collection inspiration, Azur Lane features characters from Hyperdimension Neptunia and Armored Trooper VOTOMS. Azur Lane is a pretty cool little gacha game, especially for moe fans.

Bleach Brave Souls is a gacha RPG style game (Image: google play)

  • Initial release date: January 15, 2016

    Mode: Multiplayer video game

Genre: gacha slot game, Fighting video game, MORE CODE

Developers: KLab, KLab Global Pte. Ltd.

Platforms: PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, Microsoft Windows

Publishers: KLab, KLab Global Pte. Ltd.

Bleach Brave Souls is one of the older anime games on the list, but it's still released to this day. Bleach Brave Souls is a gacha RPG style game where the player summons various characters from the Bleach universe. From there, you level them up, use them to complete the story, and play with or against other players. The game is quite long and quite difficult. Bleach Brave Souls is expected for a gacha. The only problem comes when you reach the end of the game, where all you have left to do is drag the latest characters and complete banners. The co-op community can also be a bit annoying at times. Otherwise, Bleach Brave Souls is a pretty good game.

DanMachi - Memoria Freese (Image: google play)

  • Publisher: WFS

    Platforms: iOS, Android

DanMachi - Memoria Freese adapted from the anime "Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?". Anime names aside, Memoria Freese ends up being a pretty good game. It's a classic Japanese gacha experience. You summon characters from the show, level them up, and fight bad guys. The game also includes original voice actors from the game, various custom elements, and online PvP. DanMachi – Memoria Freese started off quite rough but has since cleaned up its action.

Dragon Ball Legends (Image: google play)

  • Original release date: May 17, 2018

    Publisher: Bandai Namco Entertainment

Genre: Action game, Card game, Pub game

    Developers: Bandai Namco Entertainment, Dimps

    Platforms: Android, iOS

Dragon Ball Legends is a fighter with some light RPG elements, gacha and adventure. It has a story mode as well as online PvP multiplayer. You can also collect all the different Dragon Ball characters. Combat mechanics are similar to many free-to-play mobile fighters. Dragon Ball Legends is mostly a series of simple taps and swipes rather than any complicated mechanics. The Dragon Ball series has always been a bit too dry for my tastes, and the game is just like that. However, fans of the series seem to actually enjoy the game more than most other mobile Dragon Ball games. Most of the complaints we saw were lack of new content and some connectivity issues. Dragon Ball Z Dokkan Battle (Google Play) is another great Dragon Ball game for fans of the series.

Fate/Grand Order is from the big and popular Fate anime (Image: google play)

  • Original release date: July 30, 2015

Adaptation: Fate/Grand Order - Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia (2019)

Genre: Visual novel, Role-playing video game

    Developers: Lasengle, Delightworks

Platforms: iOS, Android, Arcade games, iPadOS

    Publishers: Aniplex, Aniplex of America

Fate/Grand Order is from the big and famous Fate anime. This is a pretty standard gacha mobile RPG. You collect several characters from the series and fight against the bad guys. Fate/Grand Order has a story mode, online PvP, and is quite F2P (free to play) player friendly. Most of the cast is fully voiced. We appreciate the little touch. Of course, Fate/Grand Order has the same pitfalls as any mobile gacha. There's a lot of honing, a bit of luck, and some corny dialog involved. However, the series The Fate itself is the same. Plus, Fate/Grand Order is one of the few mobile RPGs that play in landscape mode. More space is a good thing.

  • Mode: Multiplayer video game

    Developer: miHoYo

    Game series: Honkai

Genre: Free-to-play, Adventure Game, Fighting Video Game, Hack and slash, Adventure

Platforms: Android, Microsoft Windows, iOS, iPadOS

    Publishers: miHoYo, SU, YU-WEI

Honkai Impact 3 also follows the same path as Azur Lane. It was originally just a mobile game but was eventually adapted into an anime. The game works like most gachas but has more action with hack-and-slash action RPG mechanics. Honkai Impact 3 is a colorful game with lots of characters and lots to do. There are also seasonal events to keep things fresh for the ultimate gamer. There are in-app purchases along with the cost of the subscription. Subscription only gives you some guaranteed items just in time and you don't really need it to enjoy the game. This same developer also makes the critically acclaimed mobile RPG Genshin Impact (Google Play), which is another game on this list.

One Piece Treasure Cruise (Image: google play)

It's weird to think that there are adults on this Earth who don't know what life without One Piece looks like. It's the same with anime games and Treasure Cruise. One Piece Treasure Cruise has been around for a long time. It's a gacha RPG like most anime games. You can summon from a group of 2,000 characters, one of the largest gacha of any gacha ever developed. There are many different stories to play through, seasonal events to brood, and lots to do. It can be a little overwhelming at first, but try to keep going. You get used to most things pretty quickly in One Piece Treasure Cruise.

The Seven Deadly Sins: Grand Cross (Image: google play)

  • Original release date: March 3, 2020

    Developer: Netmarble

    Publisher: Netmarble

Genre: Role-playing video game, Adventure game, Strategy video game

    Platforms: Android, iOS, Microsoft Windows

The Seven Deadly Sins: Grand Cross is another mobile RPG. This installment takes place in the Seven Deadly Sins universe and you can get most of the characters in the series. The game also features an online PvP mode, a two-player co-op mode, and more. Unlike most gacha, you can customize the appearance of most characters so that there isn't always the same pattern. Most complaints about this one revolve around the download size of The Seven Deadly Sins: Grand Cross, which is the highest at 4GB.

Sword Art Online Integral Factor has a nostalgic element (Image: google play)

  • Original release date: December 2, 2017

    Genre: Multiplayer online role-playing game

    Publisher: Bandai Namco Entertainment

    Game series: Sword Art Online

    Developer: Bandai Namco Entertainment, Asobimo

    Platforms: Android, iOS

Sword Art Online Integral Factor is an online RPG that mimics the base premise of SAO. You and other players team up to reach the 100th floor of Aincrad. It takes longer than you think. Sword Art Online Integral Factor has an element of nostalgia because there are so many characters in the anime. Combat is your typical action RPG and the controls are actually pretty good. There are not many flaws in the game. You can also get an optional subscription that gives you various rewards to progress the game faster. In terms of the action RPG genre, Sword Art Online Integral Factor isn't half as bad.

Tales of Luminaria (Image: google play)

  • Original release date: November 3, 2021

    Developer: Colopl

    Publisher: Bandai Namco Entertainment

    Game series: Tales

Genre: Mobile Game, Action RPG Game

    Platforms: Android, iOS

Tales of Luminaria is the last Tales game left on the Google Play Store. Like most, this is a mobile RPG except this one is set in the world of Tales. There are characters from the game to help you and a total of 21 main characters, each with their own storyline. You play throughout the story, get companions to fight with, and many other things to do. Fighting is pretty simple. There's a touch mechanism to do everything for you with some extra buttons for special abilities. The camera can hurt at times, but Tales of Luminaria has improved dramatically since its release.
