A Brilliant Young Mind
A Brilliant Young Mind is a 2014 British drama film directed by Morgan Matthews and starring Asa Butterfield, Rafe Spall and Sally Hawkins. Nathan Ellis, a 9-year-old math prodigy, just lost his father in a car crash. Nathan is diagnosed with autism early on in the film, and his father is the only one who can connect normally with him. Although Nathan values his mother, Julie, he avoids all physical contact with her and treats her as more of a caregiver than a parent.
Wanting to make sure Nathan didn't get distracted with his studies, Julie signed him up for advanced classes at a new school (filmed at High Storms School in Sheffield, UK). Here, he is under the tutelage of teacher Martin, also a math genius, suffering from multiple sclerosis.. Martin sees himself in Nathan, once a promising young mind in the field of mathematics, who gave up everything when he was diagnosed with the disease. Seven years later, Martin prepares Nathan to compete for a spot at the International Mathematical Olympiad, a prestigious high school competition featuring the world's best young mathematicians.
