After a failed marriage with her ex-husband Hal (Alec Baldwin), a wealthy businessman, Jasmine (Cate Blanchett), a New York girl, flees to San Francisco. Here, she lives in the old, cramped apartment of her sister Ginger (Sally Hawkins). Even though she is mentally unstable and lacks work skills, Jasmine is still ready to confront Ginger's boyfriend, Chili (Bobby Cannavale).
The New York girl then reluctantly takes a job at a dentist's office, while her sister starts dating another man (Louis C.K), who seems to be better off than Chili.
