High school student Jiro Yakuin is an introvert who prefers to be alone and play video games rather than interact with others. He has unrequited feelings for his childhood friend, Shiori Sakurazaka, but the school has implemented a couples training program, in which students develop social skills when interacting with their partner as if they were married, and they are a heavy judge of how well they work together through supervision. Despite hoping to be paired with Shiori, Jiro is instead paired with Akari Watanabe, a gyaru who finds Jiro disgusting and who would rather be paired with the school's famous idol, Minami Tenjin. Knowing that if they gain enough points, their current partner can be switched, both Jiro and Akari agree to put their differences aside and work together.

As the story progresses, Jiro and Akari find themselves developing deeper feelings for each other as they "pretend" to be close to each other, causing confusion between them as they struggle to sort out which feelings are real and which are not. Adding to the chaos is Shiori herself, who is revealed to also be in love with Jiro. The trouble comes to a head when, during their time alone together, Minami subtly rejects Akar's confession and helps her realize that she has finally truly fallen in love with Jiro. Now that both girls want Jiro for themselves, Jiro himself struggles to decide which girl he should ultimately pursue.
