IDOL was released on August 24, 2018, by Big Hit Entertainment, as the lead single from BTS' third compilation album Love Yourself: Answer (2018). An alternate version of the song featuring Nicki Minaj was also included as a bonus track with the digital album. The single debuted at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the two versions combined sold 43,000 downloads in its first week of sales in the US. The song was also certified platinum by the RIAA.
