The connection of lonely souls
Job Harris (Murray) is a washed-up American actor who goes to Tokyo to film a commercial for Suntory wine company for a salary of two million dollars. Charlotte (Johansson) is a recent graduate who is left behind at the hotel by her husband, John (Ribisi), a celebrity photographer, on a business trip to Tokyo. Charlotte is worried about the future of her marriage with her husband, who prefers leggy models, especially a beautiful young American actress named Kelly (Faris), more than his wife. At the same time, Bob realized that his 25-year marriage was getting tired, no longer passionate, and Bob himself was in a mid-life crisis.
One night, after taking pictures, Bob returned to the bar. Charlotte, sitting with John and her friends, recognized Bob and called the waiter to give the cup of peanuts at her table to Bob. And then from then on, Bob and Charlotte met every night, a brief meeting, until Charlotte asked Bob to meet some of her friends in Tokyo. Bob agrees and then goes to Charlotte's hotel room, wearing clothes designed for the younger generation. The two form a friendship and bond over their sightseeing in Tokyo while experiencing the differences between American and Japanese cultures and between their two generations: one older, one younger.
On the penultimate night, one day before Bob had to leave, Bob was attracted to a singer in the hotel. The next morning, he woke up and saw the woman, perhaps the two had slept together. Charlotte goes to Bob's room to invite him to breakfast but only meets the other woman, leading to a tense argument at lunch. That night, the hotel's fire alarm rang, everyone was evacuated from the building, and Bob and Charlotte made up and said how they would miss each other when they met at the bar again on another trip.
The next morning, Bob departed to return to America. He said a brief goodbye to Charlotte in the lobby before checking out of the hotel and sadly watched her obscured by the elevator door. While taking a taxi to the airport, Bob saw Charlotte on a busy street, he immediately got out of the car and walked towards her. Bob hugged Charlotte and whispered in her ear (actually the audience could not hear), at this time her face was wet with tears. The two kissed, said goodbye and Bob continued on his way to the airport.
