In 1988, a businessman named Oh Dae-su was temporarily arrested at the Seoul Police Department for causing disorder while drunk. After he was bailed out by a friend, he was kidnapped and imprisoned in a mysterious room for 15 years for unknown reasons. While in captivity, he learned that his wife was murdered, evidence collected at the crime scene made him the number one suspect at that time and his daughter was adopted by a married couple. Mi-do assists Dae-su in finding the person who imprisoned him. Finally, he learned that the person was a rich man named Lee Woo-jin. Woo-jin made a condition with Dae-su that if Dae-su found the reason why he was imprisoned for 5 days, Woo-jin would commit suicide, and if he failed, Mi-do would have to die. During their courtship, Dae-su and Mi-do developed feelings and the two had sex. Dae-su later learns that he and Woo-jin once attended the same Evergreen Catholic School, leading to the mystery surrounding the death of Lee Soo-ah, Woo-jin's older sister. In the past, Dae-su witnessed Woo-jin having incest with Soo-ah. He later told his close friend, leading to many other students knowing about it. Rumors spread and Soo-ah committed suicide in disgrace, from which Woo-jin sadly sought revenge for her sister.
Dae-su comes to find Woo-jin. Woo-jin narrates the process of hypnotizing Dae-su and Mi-do so that they both fall in love. Imprisoning Dae-su for a period of 15 years was long enough to make him forget his daughter. Woo-jin shows Dae-su a photo album which indicates that Mi-do is Dae-su's biological daughter. This made Dae-su crazy, begged Woo-jin not to tell Mi-do and was so miserable that he cut his tongue. Woo-jin accepts Dae-su's apology and leaves Dae-su in torment. Entering the elevator, Woo-jin recalled the moment Soo-ah committed suicide and pulled out a gun and shot himself in the head.
Some time later, Dae-su contacted Woo-jin's hypnotist to ask her to help him forget the painful truth and was accidentally found by Mi-do. The film ends with Dae-su's happy but miserable expression, making viewers wonder whether hypnosis really helped him forget the dark truth.
