Amelia, who lost her husband in a car accident on her way to giving birth to Samuel, their only child, struggles to cope with her fate as a single mother. Samuel's constant fear of monsters and backlash to overcome her fear doesn't help her either, which drives her friends into distancing. When things couldn't get any worse, they read a strange book in their house about the monster 'Babadook' hiding in dark areas of their house. Even Amelia seems to feel Babadook's influence and tries in vain to destroy the book. The nightmarish experiences of their encounter make up the rest of the story.
