In September, 2013, an epidemic caused by the devastating American fungal parasitic Cordyceps, transformed the host as the human body into aggressive creatures known as "infected". On the outskirts of Austin, Texas, Joel (Troy Baker) flees from chaos with his brother Tommy (Jeffrey Pierce) and daughter, Sarah (Hana Hayes).
While they fled, Sarah was shot by a soldier (the superior order) and died in Joel's arms. Over the following 20 years, most human civilization was destroyed by this epidemic. The survivors who lived in isolated areas were tightly controlled by the military, independent settlements and the tourist groups.
Joel became a smuggler through his work partner, Tess (Annie Wersching) in the quarantine zone of Boston's North End. They hunt down Robert (Robin Atkin Downes), a smuggling arms dealer, to retrieve the captured Arsenal. Before Tess kills him, Robert shows that he traded the number of weapons on the Fireflies, a rebel group against the government in the quarantine zone.
