Atonement (2007) is a 2007 romantic war drama film directed by Joe Wright and starring James McAvoy, Keira Knightley, Romola Garai, Saoirse Ronan, and Vanessa Redgrave. The film is based on the 2001 novel of the same name by Ian McEwan. The film chronicles a crime and its aftermath over six decades, starting in the 1930s. It was produced for StudioCanal and scenes were shot in the UK.
It won the Academy Award for Best Original Feature at the 80th Academy Awards and was nominated for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress for Ronan. The film also received fourteen nominations at the 61st British Academy Film Awards , winning both Best Picture and Production Design , and winning the Golden Globe Award for Best Picture - Drama .
