The Shawshank Redemption is a 1994 American drama film written and directed by Frank Darabont of Stephen King's 1982 novel Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption. It tells the story of banker Andy Dufresne, who is sentenced to life in Shawshank State Prison for the murder of his wife and her lover, despite his claim of innocence. Over the next two decades, he befriended a fellow inmate, smuggler Ellis "Red" Redding, and became instrumental in a money-laundering operation led by warden Samuel Norton.
The film has been nominated for or appeared on the American Film Institute's list of the top 100 films or film-related topics. In 1998, it was nominated on AFI's list of 100 Years... 100 Movies, and ranked 72nd on the 2007 revised list, ranking higher than Life Forrest Gump and Pulp Fiction. The film also ranked 23rd on AFI's 100 Years... 100 Cheers (2006) list of inspirational films.
