The 8 Year Engagement
The 8 Year Engagement is a 2017 Japanese film directed by Takahisa Zeze. It is based on an autobiographical book by Hisashi Nishozawa and Mai Nakahara. Living in Okayama, Hisashi first met Mai at a restaurant party, but she let him know that she didn't like his moody attitude. He apologizes, saying he's been nauseous all day, and Mai, feeling apologetic, happily sees him off. The two started dating and after a few months, the shy Hisashi finally proposed to her. She says yes and they go so far as to save a place for the ceremony when Mai begins to lose her memory. One day, she suddenly experienced an extreme seizure accompanied by hysteria.
At the hospital, she suffered a heart attack, but even when the doctors saved her, she remained in a coma. Hisashi visits the hospital every day and helps take care of her with her parents Hatsumi and Kōji. However, they began to worry about Hisashi, and told him not to come one day, suggesting that he move on with his life. He refused, because he remembered his promise to marry Mai. More than a year later, Mai finally woke up from her coma, but according to the doctor, she needed to start all over again, relearning how to speak and move her body.
