Singer Khanh Ly
Khanh Ly (real name: Nguyen Thi Le Mai, born March 6, 1945) is a Vietnamese-American singer, known for her alto voice. Starting her singing career in the 1960s, associated with the songs of Trinh Cong Son, Khanh Ly is one of the most typical voices of Vietnamese new music. Khanh Ly is also very successful with pre-war songs and many other musicians such as Pham Duy, Tram Tu Thieng, Vu Thanh An, Nguyen Dinh Toan... Her stage name Khanh Ly was created from the names of two characters Khanh Ky. and Yao Ly in the Eastern Zhou Dynasty.
After 1975, Khanh Ly left Vietnam and settled in Cerritos, California, USA. In 1979, Columbia Nippon again invited Khanh Ly to Japan to record music by Trinh Cong Son. In 1982, Bunka Honso Radio invited Khanh Ly to participate in the Asian Music Festival with many artists from many Asian countries. In 1985, Khanh Ly and her husband, journalist Nguyen Hoang Doan, opened their own record label Khanh Ly Productions. In 1987, Khanh Ly returned to Japan to record the film Boat Man (Boat Man).
In 1988, being a devout Catholic, Khanh Ly was invited to the Vatican for the canonization of Vietnamese martyrs. During this event, Khanh Ly met Pope John Paul II. In 1989, after the Berlin Wall was demolished, Khanh Ly and Thanh Tuyen sang in the first music show in East Germany. In 1992, Khanh Ly was invited to World Youth Day in Denver, Colorado (USA), and for the second time she met Pope John Paul II. In 1996, NKH Television in Japan selected Khanh Ly as one of 10 famous characters to make a documentary about Khanh Ly's life and family.
Currently, Khanh Ly continues her singing career and is a mainstay diva of Thuy Nga Center. To celebrate 50 years of singing, Khanh Ly and friends held a free concert at Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, California on November 30, 2012, and then pulled For several months, she "accompanied many young singers to many churches across the United States to donate CDs of hymns".
