Trailer

In 1957, 7-year-old Bryce Loski moved in next door to Julianna "Juli" Baker. Looking into each other's eyes, Juli knew it was love, but Bryce was insecure and avoided her. Four years later Juli is still completely smitten, rarely leaving Bryce alone. Desperate to get away from her, he pretends to date Sherry Stalls, a popular girl she dislikes. Bryce's best friend, Garrett, told Sherry the truth so she dumped him. Embarrassed, Bryce hopes that in the upcoming seventh grade, Juli will finally meet someone else. The following year, Bryce's grandfather Chet Duncan moved in. Juli loved an old fig tree in their neighborhood, so when one day they started cutting it down, she tried to protect it by climbing up, refusing to come down. After much attention from the town, her father Richard spoke to her and it was removed. Juli was inconsolable until he gave her a picture of it, which calmed her down. An article was printed about it in the local newspaper.

Juli begins raising chickens in their backyard using chicks from a school project and they quickly begin laying eggs, which she sells to neighbors but gives to Loskis as a gesture. She was hurt when she discovered Bryce had thrown them away because his father was afraid of salmonella. Mentioning the poor condition of her yard, Juli was embarrassed so she decided to fix it. After reading the article about Juli, Chet helps her garden. He grew fond of her, because she reminded him of his late wife. When Bryce's father Steven criticizes the Bakers' seeming lack of pride in their property, Chet points out that they rent the house. Most of their finances go toward caring for Juli's mentally disabled uncle, Daniel, so the homeowner is the one who has to maintain the yard. As Chet spends more time with Juli and encourages Bryce to open his mind, Bryce realizes he has feelings for her.

Meanwhile, as Juli is encouraged by Chet to open her mind, she begins to question whether she really likes Bryce. Accompanying his father to visit Daniel on his birthday, they have a difficult but ultimately positive interaction. Later, Juli is told by a classmate that Bryce is admiring her, but she overhears Bryce agreeing with Garrett when he makes fun of her and Daniel, causing Juli to completely lose interest. Unbeknownst to her, Bryce is disgusted with Garrett's attitude and keeps his distance from him, but they remain friendly.
