Mia (Emma Stone) is an actress and bartender with many ambitions. On a crowded highway in winter in Los Angeles ("Another Day of Sun"), she accidentally meets Sebastian (Ryan Gosling), a jazz musician. After failing at an audition, Mia's three roommates invite Mia to a luxurious party in the Hollywood Hills ("Someone in the Crowd") to cheer her up. At the end of the party, Mia realized her car was being towed and had to walk home. Also that day, Sebastian argued with his sister Laura (Rosemarie DeWitt) about the monthly bill before going to a restaurant to play music. The restaurant's owner, Bill (J. K. Simmons), instructs him to play only simple Christmas songs, but Sebastian suddenly gives a powerful solo ("Mia & Sebastian's Theme"), just in time for Mia. I heard him on the way home and turned into the bar to watch him perform. When she learned that Sebastian was fired, Mia approached to praise him, but Sebastian walked past her coldly, full of disappointment.
Months later, Mia goes to a party and finds Sebastian again, playing keyboards in a 1980s pop band. She asks the group to play "I Ran (So Far Away)" from A Flock of Seagulls and teases Sebastian playfully. After the party, they pretend to complain about each other on the way to find a car, even though the two get along very well ("A Lovely Night"). Sebastian took Mia to Lighthouse coffee (a jazz cafe), explained his strong passion for jazz and his desire to own his own nightclub, and encouraged her to become an actress ("City of Stars"). Sebastian invited her to a screening of Rebel Without a Cause at a movie theater. Before the movie, another man Mia is dating, Greg (Finn Wittrock), suddenly appears and takes her to a restaurant date with his brother. Feeling reluctant and lost, Mia suddenly runs away to the movie theater with Sebastian. Just as the two were about to kiss, the movie crashed halfway through and they ended their date at the Griffith Observatory ("Planetarium").
