TV Mini Series 1995
Mr. Charles Bingley, a wealthy gentleman from the north of England, settled at the Netherfield estate near the village of Meryton in Hertfordshire in the autumn. Mrs. Bennet, unlike her husband, is excited at the prospect of marrying one of her five daughters (Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty and Lydia) to the newcomer. Mr. Bennet affirmed that he had no intention of visiting Mr. Bingley; unless he does so, his wife and daughters will not be able to mingle with Mr. Bingley. Mrs. Bennett, confused by Mr. Bennett's refusal to get to know Bingley, declares that she wishes the girls would stop talking about Mr. Bingley together, since they will never meet him anyway. Mr. Bennet replied that he wished he had known that sooner because he had visited Mr. Bingley. Mrs. Bennett and the young girls were extremely shocked and ecstatic. Bingley takes an immediate liking to Jane at a local country dance, while his best friend, Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, rumored to be twice as rich as Bingley, refuses to dance with anyone, even Elizabeth. Elizabeth's unfavorable impression of his character was confirmed during a subsequent gathering at Lucas Lodge, and she and Darcy clashed verbally during the two nights she spent in Netherfield, caring for a sick Jane after when riding in the rain.
Mr. William Collins, a flattering and somewhat foolish clergyman, visits his cousins, the Bennets. As Mr. and Mrs. Bennett had no son, he would be the heir to their house and estate, Longbourn. He plans to marry a Bennet daughter as an act of goodwill, to reassure Mrs. Bennet that she and her unwed daughters will not be homeless when Mr. Collins inherits the estate. Therefore, he invited himself for a two-week visit to get to know the Bennets better and choose a daughter to marry. However, the Bennet girls judge Mr. Collins to be a rather ridiculous man, a "weird" person with many characteristics in his speech and behavior. However, they treated him civilly and took him to balls and social events in Meryton. One day, while walking around the village of Meryton, they met members of a newly arrived militia regiment, including Mr. George Wickham. At a social event, Wickham befriends Elizabeth and mentions that his father was a manager for Darcy's late father, and he initially planned to join the clergy. However, Darcy refused to give Wickham the "living" (curacy) that Mr. Darcy's father had promised him. At a ball in Netherfield, Darcy invites Elizabeth to dance and she reluctantly but politely accepts. Mrs. Bennet tells Mr. Collins that she expects Jane to be engaged soon, so he proposes to Elizabeth instead. She firmly refused him. While Mrs. Bennet reacts angrily to Elizabeth's decision, her close friend, Charlotte Lucas, invites Mr. Collins to visit Lucas Lodge.
