The Danish Girl is based on the life of Lili Elbe, the first transgender woman in history to have sex reassignment surgery.
The film follows the life of Einar Wegener (Eddie Redmayne), a Danish painter in the 1920s, and his journey as he discovers and expresses himself as a woman. After accidentally trying on his wife's (Alicia Vikander) dress, Einar feels the freedom and great contrast between makeup, disguise and his previous idyllic life. Gradually, he began to change to live under the name Lili Elbe.
Lili Elbe's life from learning about herself, to facing opposition from society and receiving support from famous painter Gerda has created emotionally complex situations. Lili finally decided to have her first gender reassignment surgery, even though it was very dangerous at the time, to be herself.
The film shows Lili's struggle to find herself, facing difficulties and challenges in honor, love and society. It also focuses on the complex relationship between Lili and her wife Gerda, their emotions, feelings and bond in accepting and supporting each other.
