On Your Side is a Japanese romantic drama film, directed by Nobuhiro Doi and based on the novel of the same name by Takuji Ichikawa. The film stars two main actors, Yūko Takeuchi and Shido Nakamura, as Mio Aio and Takumi Aio, two husband and wife who have a magical love affair.
The film begins with Takumi Aio, a widower living a quiet life with his 6-year-old son Yuji after the death of his wife Mio. Yuji always remembers Mio's promise to return to reunite with father and son when the rainy season comes. Takumi also loves Mio very much and looks forward to the day he sees her again. Before Mio died, she left her son a photo album, and he blamed himself for her death. When the rainy season comes, Takumi and Yuji find Mio at an old station but she remembers absolutely nothing about herself, her husband and children. Takumi decides to hide from Mio that she has been dead for a year and helps her find her memories. All three of them had a peaceful life as before. Mio gradually remembers the happy and sad moments in their lives. She also learned that she had a serious illness and had to have heart surgery.
When the rainy season passes, it is also time for Mio to leave father and daughter. She says goodbye to Takumi and Yuji and says she will always love them, and says she has returned to help Takumi move on with his life and so Yuji can grow up. She hopes that they will always be happy and not sad because of her. Afterwards, Mio disappeared in Takumi's arms when the rain stopped.
