Chihayafuru: Kami no ku tells the story of main character Chihaya Ayase, a high school girl who loves karuta, a traditional Japanese game with cards depicting ancient poems. Chihaya meets Arata Wataya, a boy who recently transferred from Fukui Prefecture, when the two are placed together in class. Arata is a karuta genius, whose dream is to become Meijin, the highest title in male karuta. He encourages Chihaya to play karuta and believes that she has the potential to become Queen, the highest title in women's karuta. Together with Taichi Mashima, Chihaya's childhood friend, the three friends form an elementary school karuta team and participate in tournaments.
