Love Letter (1995) is a Japanese romantic film directed and written by Iwai Shunji. The film tells the love story between two women, Fujii Hiroko (Nakayama Miho) and Watanabe Itsuki (Toyokawa Etsushi), who died in a skiing accident.
The movie begins with Hiroko saddened by the death of Itsuki, her ex-lover. She recalls their memories and decides to write a letter to Itsuki's old address in Otaru, Hokkaido. She did not expect that her letter would be answered by a person with the same name Itsuki (Nakayama Miho), who is a middle school classmate of male Itsuki. The two began exchanging letters and gradually understood each other better. They share stories about the male Itsuki, who left a deep impression on their hearts, and discover secrets and truths about the male Itsuki, such as the fact that he has loved Hiroko for a long time, or that he have a difficult and lonely life. The film ends with the two meeting in Otaru on the male Itsuki's birthday. They hugged each other and said goodbye. The two understand that they cannot replace the male Itsuki in each other's hearts, but they are also grateful to each other for giving each other comfort and hope.
